John C. Coleman
John Coleman is the Rector of The Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Montgomery, Alabama. In this role, he serves as senior ordained minister of the church. John was born in Hutchinson, Kansas. He is the youngest of five children, with three older sisters and one older brother. When he was 11-years-old, his family moved from the plains of Kansas to Dothan, Alabama. John graduated from Northview High School and the University of Alabama. During his senior year at The University, John was elected Student Government Association President and received the University of Alabama Alumni Association Student Award.
John attended the University of Alabama School of Law. He graduated in 1994 and began his work with Covan World-Wide Moving, Inc., as the managing director of claims. John worked with Covan for more than eight years, serving in many capacities. He left Covan in the summer of 2002 to attend seminary at the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church in New York City. Upon graduation from GTS, John served as Vicar of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Andalusia, Alabama. John accepted a call to serve as the seventh rector of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension on Easter Sunday 2007. He began in May of the same year.
John met the former Mary Jordan when he moved back to Dothan in 1995. Mary’s hometown is Tallahassee, Florida. She graduated from Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, Georgia. John and Mary were married in 1998. They have two sons, James (10) and William (7) and one daughter, Caroline (5).
